What is an Anagram?

Before getting into how to use our anagram solver, let’s explain what an anagram is in the first place. By definition, an anagram is a word, phrase, or name that is formed from the letters of another word or phrase. In other words, you simply rearrange all the letters from one word or phrase to create brand new words or phrases. Some people call it a word scramble or word jumble. Whatever floats your boat.

True Anagrams

Most of the time, when you think about what is an anagram, you’re probably thinking about a true anagram. A true anagram, also called a full anagram, uses all the letters from the original word or phrase when making a new word or phrase.

For example, if your original word has seven letters, then a true anagram generator would come up with a new 7 letter word without skipping or repeating letters. A great example is the word "anagram" itself. If you use the letters to create an anagram, you can form the short phrase "nag a ram."

One or More Words From an Anagram

Depending on what you’re trying to achieve as an anagram finder yourself, you can form more than one word with the letters that you have. Of course, anagrams of one word can also be another single word. With some anagram generator help, you might see that the word “stressed” can turn into the word “desserts.” Pretty sweet, right? No need to sweat it when you’ve got an awesome anagram solver at your disposal.

What Are Partial Anagrams?

If full or true anagrams use up all the letters from the original word or phrase, then you can probably guess what partial anagrams are. With a partial anagram, you don’t have to use every letter from the original word to form your new word. You just have to use some of them and not introduce any new letters.

Let’s use the word "anagram" as an example again. Using those letters, you can form shorter words like AN, MA, MAR, RAN, AGAR, MANA, ARGAN, GARAM and MANGA.

Partial Anagram Solver

If partial anagrams are what you’re working with, you’re in luck. Our anagram generator also offers solutions for those too. Simply enter the letters you have and let the automatic anagram solver work its magic.

The word scramble results are conveniently sorted by word length. This way, if you need anagrams that are exactly five letters long, like when you need some Wordle help, you can jump straight to that section. Want to find seven letter words? This is the Scrabble® word finder for you!

Anagram Solver Tips

Isn’t it great how easy it is to use our anagram solver? It takes care of all of the work for you. Though, what if you want to try your hand at being an anagram finder the old-fashioned way? Then we suggest following these anagram solving tips.

  1. If you’re trying to decode anagrams on your own, a traditional pen-and-paper approach can sometimes be more helpful. There’s something about the analog strategy that triggers certain parts of your brain in unique and powerful ways.

  2. Start by recognizing combinations of letters that usually go together, especially letters that don’t often stand alone. Take TH and CK, for example. And while there are some words with Q not followed by U, they’re generally quite rare. That’s how you might find 5 letter words with QU like QUICK, QUACK, TOQUE, plus longer words like REQUIRE and OPAQUE. Other useful combos include CH, PH, SH, WH, NK, BL and so on.

  3. Prefixes and suffixes can be building blocks for your new words. Popular prefixes include AD-, DE-, EX-, IN-, RE-, SUB- and UN-. For suffixes, you might look for -ED, -ER, -ION, -ING, -ISM, -LY, -NESS and -TION.

  4. Taking out these common combinations, prefixes and suffixes, move the remaining letters around to see what anagram words you can make.

  5. Another strategy is to ignore all the vowels, at least at first. By focusing only on consonants, you may see words that you might otherwise overlook. The human brain is great at “filling in the blanks” for missing vowels.

  6. If you need an anagram solver for multiple words, especially if you have a lot of letters and want to form a phrase, picking out common short words can help. Words like A, AN, ON, TO, FOR and THE can be a good place to start.

  7. Practice! The obvious tip for an anagram finder is also one of the most difficult and time-consuming. Practice doesn’t always make perfect, but it can make the process easier the more you do it. No one is born an expert anagram solver.

Using an Anagram Maker for Word Games

There are tons of reasons why you might be interested in using an anagram generator. Maybe you’re working on a creative writing project, like a poem or a story. Using the anagram solver as an anagram maker is great for clever wordplay, sneaking in some hidden meaning behind your writing. That’s fantastic.

When you’re playing some of your favorite word games, using an anagram maker usually comes with a different kind of motivation. You want to win. From Words With Friends® to Wordscapes® and crossword puzzles, an anagram word solver can help you rake in the big points, beat tough levels and one-up the competition. Need 5 letter T words? We can help.

In many of these games, you may not need an anagram cheat tool to use all the available letters. Instead, it could be more about maximizing your score or finding the ideal placement.

Score Big Bonuses

Say that you’ve solved the anagram and you now have the word RELAXES. Playing all seven letter tiles on your rack, you’ll earn the bingo bonus. That’s great. You plan on adding the E to the end of an existing word on your game board. Notice how RELAXES has two E’s in it? Depending on how you align this word on the board, you may earn more or fewer points.

  • Can you reach a double or triple word bonus square?

  • What about aligning the word so the X letter tile lands on a double or triple letter bonus square?

  • If you play the word RELAXES a certain way, are you opening up a big opportunity for your opponent?

Choices like these can greatly affect how many points you get (and how many points your opponent scores on their next turn). This could spell the difference between victory and defeat!

Fun With Anagrams

People have enjoyed rearranging random letters into words or phrases for centuries. Even the ancient Greeks, as far back as the 4th century BC, liked to play around with anagrams. The Greek poet Lycophron flattered the rich and mighty with his anagrams. Anagramming is fun! But, it can also be tedious and frustrating to do by hand.

The WordFinder® anagram solver makes everything easier, faster and more enjoyable. Unscramble all the words you need in a few swift clicks.

Better still, the more you play around with our anagram solver, the better you’ll get at being an anagram finder yourself. You’ll start to recognize a variety of common letter combinations and learn tons of new words along the way. English can be a tricky language, especially as it borrows from many other languages. So, practice and repetition will be your best teachers.

An anagram word solver does exactly what you need it to do: solve anagrams and find words. You just might be surprised by how many words can emerge from a single set of letter tiles! Opportunities abound when you use the best anagram solver online.
