Driving in and around Malaga
There’s so much to see along the picturesque Costa del Sol and the airport is in a fantastic location, with easy access to all the major roads. This region has an extensive road network, making it easy to explore Malaga and the wider area.
Motorways in Spain are known as ‘autovias’ and marked with the letter A, though you may come across toll motorways called ‘autopistas’, which use an AP lettering system.
While in Spain, you’ll drive on the right hand side of the road. When driving through tunnels, dipped headlights must be used and full beams should not be turned on in built-up areas. The maximum speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 120km/h. On rural roads it falls to 90km/h and in built-up urban and residential areas it’s 50km/h.
From the airport it takes around 20 minutes to drive to the centre of Malaga on the MA-20. If you’re staying in nearby Marbella, head along the AP-7, which should take around 40 minutes to reach your destination. Those venturing further afield to Nerja should take the A-7 east, which only takes around 55 minutes.
Drive into the hills and take in the natural surroundings, with historical Granada and Seville not too far away. Take the A-92 - east for Granada and west for Seville. If you want to go in search of secluded sandy spots along the coast, try Playa de Maro or Calahonda beach near Mijas.
Discover all of southern Spain’s history, visit traditional villages and enjoy the laidback Mediterranean lifestyle when you hire a car from Malaga Airport.
A quick guide to Malaga
A bustling old town, beautiful beaches, striking architecture – Malaga is one of the best places to revel in the warm Mediterranean sunshine. Feast on delicious local dishes and enjoy views that take in everything from dramatic mountain peaks to the glittering azure sea.
Explore iconic seafronts
Malaga’s proximity to the coast, nearby cities and fishing villages provides the perfect opportunity to spend your break beach hopping. Hire a sunbed or lay a towel down on the dark sands of Playa el Palo.
This family friendly sun spot is fringed by beautiful waters if you’re in need of a refreshing dip, while its café and restaurant are perfect for a spot of lunch or some thirst-quenching drinks.
Discover charming Nerja, just up the coast from Malaga. Idyllic beaches are in abundance in this pretty seaside resort. Plant yourself down on the sandy Playa Burriana and soak up the Mediterranean sunshine. As day turns to dusk, head for one of the restaurants lining the beach to sample some delicious fresh seafood.
For a touch of luxury, Marbella is a beautiful coastal location. Make for the pretty seafront promenade – this tree-lined stretch is the perfect introduction to this city, teeming with cafes and restaurants overlooking the beach.
Discover historic spots
Malaga’s history is a storied one – the city is thought to have been established 3,000 years ago. Get a taste for its heritage at the 11th century Alcazaba. This formidable fortress stands sentinel over the town below. Wander through sun-kissed courtyards and drink in incredible views of the city from the Maldonado tower.
A short drive from Malaga is the pretty village of Velez-Malaga. Brimming with historic architecture, this small village seems frozen in time, giving you a unique glimpse into the country’s past. Visit religious buildings, fortress walls and Renaissance palaces, such as the Palace of the Marquises of Beniel.
If you have more time to play with, take the A-92 to Granada. This beautiful city plays home to a wide range of historic treasures, but the jewel in its crown is the magnificent Alhambra.
Moorish culture is preserved in all its splendour at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll lazily though the palace complex, marvelling at the intricate architectural detailing and manicured gardens.
Experience lush landscapes
One of the best ways to experience the Costa del Sol is to drive up into the countryside and hike through the rolling hills and lush greenery. Stop off in local hilltop villages for authentic tapas and to soak up the local culture.
Take the drive from Malaga Airport up into the hills of Montes de Malaga Natural Park for spectacular scenery and stunning sunsets to match. Not far from here is the Parque Natural Sierra de Castril. Park your car and follow the footpaths and bridges around the edge of the steep gorge, in search of waterfalls and pools for a refreshing dip.
Car hire from Malaga Airport allows you to explore all that this beautiful city and the surrounding area have to offer.
