To reach the city centre from the airport, you can take the most direct route on the MA-20, which is 14km and takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can take in some of the area's beautiful coastlines via the slightly longer but more scenic route on the MA-22.

For further flung road trips, the A-7, sometimes known as the 'Autovia del Mediterraneo', is your friend. The A-7 is a major highway that tightly hugs the coast all the way from Barcelona, right down through Marbella, Malaga and down to Algeciras. Another important highway is the AP-7, which can take you to Gibraltar. You can also take the AP-7 east and north, all the way up the coast to city resorts like Alicante.

In Spain, drivers use the right-hand side of the road, overtaking on the left. In built-up areas, speed is restricted to 50 km/h, 20 in residential zones. As for highways, the maximum speed limit is 120 km/h. Standard roads usually cap speeds at 100 km/h. Police enforce these limits and can issue on-the-spot fines to anyone caught speeding. Roam around the Roman theater

Málaga's grand and majestic El Teatro Romano is now well over 2,000 years old. A historic treasure that serves as an impressive reminder of the importance of the area in Roman times, this theater is an unmissable destination. Despite its ancient status, the theater has only been available to the public for a short amount of time. Rediscovered back in 1951 and finally restored in 2003, the site has quite literally been a hidden treasure for centuries.

Commissioned by the Roman Emperor Augustus all the way back in the 1st century BC, this amphitheater was in full use all the way up until the 3rd Century AD. Now painstakingly restored to its former glory, these ruins draw in huge swathes of fascinated visitors, keen to learn all about Malaga's part in the story of the Roman dynasty.

The free-to-enter site operates a modest but well-run and interesting little visitor center, complete with several audio-visual displays, as well as an excellent exhibition space.

Discover Catedral de Malaga

While in the city, discover the eye-catching architecture of the Catedral de Malaga. A sun-baked, golden building featuring swooping domes and a soaring tower, it dominates the city’s skyline. Head inside the 16^th century masterpiece and explore the enormous nave, taking in the reverent atmosphere as you go.

For an even more memorable experience, join a guided tour which takes you to the roof of the building. From here, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views of the rest of the city. The church took 200 years to build, yet one of the towers was left unfinished, earning it the affectionate nickname of La Manquita, or the one-armed lady.
