Roaches, rodents, insects among reasons 9 Central Florida restaurants shut down last week (2024)

Nine Central Florida restaurants shut down in the week of May 14-20, according to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Orange County

N Y Giant Pizza & Pasta Inc. at 5643 E. Colonial Dr. in Orlando shut down on May 11. Inspectors found 25 violations, nine of which were a high priority. Those violations included moldy food, flying insects, roaches and operating with an expired business license.

Officials made a second trip on May 12 and a third trip on May 15. They found 14 violations for the former and five violations for the latter. They found no high-priority violations on the May 15 inspection but stated the restaurant needed a follow-up inspection.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant at 38 E. Main St. in Apopka shut down on May 16. Officials found 18 violations, seven of which were a high priority. Those violations included dented food cans, flying insects, rodent activity, and a repeat violation of food held at the wrong temperatures.

Inspectors conducted a second inspection on May 17. They found eight violations and issued a time extension for raw food stored within the ready-to-eat food freezer. ‘

The restaurant met inspection standards.

Vampire Penguin at 515 N. Park Ave. #102, in Apopka shut down on May 16. Inspectors found six violations, but none were a high priority.

The restaurant met inspection standards after a follow-up visit the same day.

Volusia County

Royal Indian Foods at 144 Ridgewood Ave in Holly Hill shut down on May 15. Inspectors found 17 violations, three of which were a high priority. Those violations included flying insects, roach activity and wastewater from the hand sink being backed up through the floor drain at the cook line.

After finding 11 violations on May 17, officials said the restaurant didn’t comply with the order. A second inspection that day found 10 violations, but none were a high priority. A follow-up inspection is required.

Soul Foods at 456 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Daytona Beach shut down on May 19. Inspectors found 11 violations, three of which were a high priority. Those violations included rusted food cans, raw animal foods not separated from ready-to-eat food and rodent activity.

A follow-up inspection the same day found seven violations, none of which were a high priority. The restaurant met inspection standards.

Seminole County

Never Phoget A Taste Of Vietnam at 505 State Road 436 in Casselberry shut down on May 16. Inspectors found 14 violations, only one high-priority violation for roach activity.

A second inspection the same day found 10 violations, none of which were a high priority. The restaurant met inspection standards.

Osceola County

Maracas Restaurant at 3271 S. John Young Parkway in Kissimmee shut down on May 16. Inspectors found 17 violations, five of which were a high priority. Those violations included a stop-sale on food due to temperature abuse, rodent activity, and two food temperature violations.

The same day’s second inspection found nine violations, but none were a high priority.

The restaurant met inspection standards.

Main Gate Flea Market Food Court #1at 5407 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee shut down on May 17. Inspectors found 41 violations, 13 of which were a high priority. Those violations included roach activity, rodent activity, a rodent nest, a stop-sale on food due to temperature abuse and an employee handling raw and ready-to-eat food without gloves.

A second visit took place on May 18. Inspectors found 35 violations, 11 of which were a high priority.

Inspectors conducted a third visit on May 19. They found 35 violations, and many of the violations were the same as the previous day. The restaurant didn’t comply with the emergency order and remains closed.

Loading…Gastrobrunch at 1023 New York Ave. in St. Cloud shut down on May 18. Inspectors found 13 violations, one of which was a high priority for rodent activity.

A second visit took place on May 19. Officials found seven violations; none were a high priority.

The restaurant met inspection standards.

Complaints and warnings

Orange County had the top spot for most warnings and other complaints in Central Florida with 40.

Volusia had 15, Seminole had 14, Lake had four, Brevard had 17 and Osceola had six. Warnings given with required follow-up inspections could lead to a business being shut down if problems remain.
