(After some testing, will add to the list)
Sugar cane = 3 plots

For me at least

1 for cocoa
3 for potato wheat and carrot although 2 might work
3 for melon but again 2 is decent
Haven't tested others but I assume wart is that same as wheat and stuff

By decent, could you provide an estimation on how many crops are grown back? If not that’s ok, I’ll try it tomorrow

Probably like 3/4 of the crops but I haven't really tested it I typically just always use 3 since ik it will be infinite and I only need like 2-3 crops out at once

Btw all plots are one layer and then the farm design im using is base preset for melons pumpkins and cocoa and then for the other ones im using the one where u slide in the water and break 5 blocks at a time

You can do 5x rows of Carrot, Wheat, Potato, and Wart. 3 layers of Melon and Pumpkin. Feel free to visit my garden if you want to see the design

I am in the process of designing the most compact garden design possible, but first I need to know how many plots is equivalent to an infinite farm. Please feel free to contribute to this list (even if your findings are small)

  • Wheat, Carrot, and Potato = 3 layers on a 96x96 plot is infinite. You can stack 5 layers per plot if it is placed correctly. (/visit UGam3z if you want to see how to build it this way)
  • Sugar Cane = 3 layers on a 96x96 plot is infinite. You can only stack 2 layers per plot no matter how you design it
  • Pumpkin & Melon = 3 layers on a 96x96 plot is infinite. You can stack 3 layers per plot if it is placed correctly. (/visit UGam3z if you want to see how to build it this way)
  • Cocoa Beans = 1 layer on a 96x96 plot, can only stack 1 layer per plot (assuming the logs are 4 blocks tall) no matter how you design it

Other notes:

  • One plot is exactly 96x96 blocks.
  • Crops cannot grow past the “plot height limit” (example: placing a cane on the 10th block up will not allow it to grow taller)
  • Wheat, Carrot, Potato, and Netherwart hitboxes are bigger in 1.12+. Switching to this version to farm is slightly more effective.
  • You can clear a single plot from bedrock to the top, set it to a preset, and paste it on your other plots in order to clear out your garden to begin building your own farm.
  • Wheat, Carrot, and Potato grow at the same rate.
  • Pumpkin and Melon grow at the same rate.

Could you please tell me how to use the pumpkin and melon farm?

For this, I suggest skipping to 15:01 in IdkDom’s #1 Pumpkin farmer video.

I will note that this farm is 10% slower than using 240 speed and manually farming, but is generally preferred amongst the farming community as it allows semi-afk farming.

i think 2-3 layers of 96x96 mushroom farm is infinite after height nerf. (hf placing all the red and brown mushroom manually)

but nw is too slow to make it infinite.

Ima just use the presets. I found a pretty good way to make a potato farm infinite with the least amount of effort. You get two plots that are right next to each other from top down(hard to explain but example is plots 5 and 2), break the wooden barriers in between, and you get twice as much farm with the same amount of turning. It's not quite infinite, possibly because when I'm farming the end parts, the beginning of the farm is too far away for me to render with my current settings. However it is enough for a silver medal with quite a lot extra.

Are the growth rate changes live yet? Otherwise, I would advise against planning compact designs now. Waiting for the changes to roll around will be the most efficient way to get rid of space for farms.

I have 3 layers of pumpkin and its nowhere near infinite for me
the farm is maybe 85-90% fully grown when im back to the start
unless you are talking about the weird compact design where you dont place water every row but instead place it every few dirt blocks, which is annoying to semi-afk

Note: you can use patcher (1.8.9 forge mod) to get 1.12+ crop hitboxes on 1.8.9

It's allowed since it's basically something people on modern versions get anyways

I believe they have not been rolled out. I set up a spreadsheet which I will screenshot and upload here later; as of now, every crop is already infinite (haven’t built it yet) and admins said they plan on increasing speeds, not decreasing it.

I will update this. Something people don’t realize is that the compact no-water row design leaves approximately 10 pumpkins missing per 2 rows, which can cost you in farming contests. It’s now better to do the water rows so that you can get full rows of pumpkin, maximizing your pumpkin output. Granted, it barely matters, but this could decide whether you get a gold or silver in a contest.

I have added more to my farm as well. Full Sugar Cane, Coco, and split my Melon and Pumpkin to make them even more efficient. Next will be to add a cactus and mushroom.
